The realities behind a painting of girls
SHIMA Seien, Dressing Up for the Festival, 1913
Three girls in gala dress wearing ribbons in their hair are sitting on a bench in front of a store decorated with bunting for a summer festival. One other girl a short distance away is staring at them with a look of envy. Children from wealthy families, and a child from an ordinary family. Although all the girls are cute, the clothes they are wearing almost cruelly bespeak the different economic states of their parents. This heart-breaking scene conveying the difficult feelings of a young girl was painted by Shima Seien, an Osaka-born woman artist. In depicting the girls, Seien renders their expressions, mannerisms, and patterns on their kimono in considerable detail.
