Through a round window, one sees a longed-for strange land
Kangetsu Shitomi, Rozan (Lu Shan) Edo period/18th century
This work, painted by Shitomi Kangetsu, an Osaka artist, depicts Mt. Lu, a famous mountain in the northern part of Jiangxi Province, China. In this painting, especially in the depiction of rocks and trees, we can see the influence of Sesshū (ca. 1420–1506), a painter of the Muromachi period. The painting depicts the White Deer Grotto Academy larger than its surroundings. The academy was rebuilt and expanded by Zhu Xi (1130–1200), a Chinese philosopher of the Southern Song period. For this reason, the painting may have been chosen as suitable for display at Kaitokudo, a private school in Osaka that focused on Zhu Xi philosophy.
