A design symbolizing Vienna’s transformation
Otto WAGNER, Desk and Stool, 1904
In the late nineteenth century, Vienna underwent a great transformation owing to major urban renovations in the city under Emperor Joseph I. Architect Otto Wagner (1841–1918), who led projects in not only building architecture but also canal renovations and the development of the city’s railways, pursued a style appropriate to the times as the new century approached. He aimed for beauty that responded to needs. Wagner also designed the Vienna Postal Savings Bank, a building representative of his architecture, as well as its furniture. His furniture designs are unified with the building and stand out for their open-plan-office form.
