The floral design impressed on this bowl conveys a sense of history
Bowl with Stamped Floral Design, Earthenware with Three Color Lead Glaze Ware China, Tang dynasty/ 8th century Taman Collection
This small bowl was made in China in the eighth century during the Tang period. The shape and design of this bowl imitates high-quality gold and silver bowls of this period. Some similar bowls brought to Japan during this time were used as lids for burial jars containing the cremated remains of Buddha. This piece was part of the East Asian art collection of Kiyoomi Taman (1892–1979), a former member of the House of Representatives and lawyer in Osaka. In 1980, the first anniversary of his death, and again in 1982 and 1987, his wife and son, in accord with his will, donated the collection to the City of Osaka in three installments.
