Toyotomi castle towns bustling with activity

A pair of folding screens with views of Kyoto and Osaka Mid Edo period/17th century

The left screen shows a view of Kyoto, and the right screen shows a view of Osaka in the Toyotomi era. The right folding screen showing a scene of Osaka has the south on the right side of the screen and the north on the left side. At top left can be seen the Osaka Castle keep, while at top right is the Shitennoji Temple and Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine. Inside Osaka Castle and in the areas of samurai residences and common people's houses surrounding the castle, you can see people gathered for a festival. This folding screen is thought to have been painted in the mid Edo period. It is a valuable record of a time when Osaka was a flourishing city under Toyotomi Hideyori, a son of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. In the center of the left folding screen showing a scene of Kyoto is the Great Buddha Hall of Hokoji Temple, which became the cause of Toyotomi's eventual downfall.
