The first acquisition of the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts

Kansetsu Hashimoto, Dogs (1936)

This commemorable work was exhibited at the first Imperial Academy of Fine Arts Exhibition, held in 1936, when the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts opened, and became the museum’s first item in its collection. This near-life-size drawing of Western dogs was unusual at the time. The right screen depicts a well-groomed borzoi with long white fur and a red peony, while the left screen depicts two smooth-skinned greyhounds, one black and one brown, together forming two contrasting panels. The supple bodies and soft fur textures are skillfully combined, filling the composition with the power and elegance of Western dogs.
