A poster of the beautiful Sarah Bernhardt

Alphonse MUSHA, Gismonda, 1894, Suntory Poster Collection (deposited in Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka)

This was the first large-scale lithograph that Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939) produced in his lifetime. It was a poster to promote a play set in Athens, performed at the Renaissance Theater by Sarah Bernhardt, a popular Parisian actress at the end of the nineteenth century. As soon as it was made public, the poster became a huge hit throughout Paris. According to an anecdote, Sarah herself was so happy with the result that she cried. This work that made Mucha famous, by fully demonstrating his rare talent for drawing and for producing intricate decorative patterns.
