A poster where East meets West
Henri de TOULOUSE-LAUTREC, Moulin Rouge — La Goulue, 1891, Suntory Poster Collection (deposited in Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka)
This is the first large-scale lithograph poster that the painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864–1901) created for the Parisian café-concert Moulin Rouge. The popular Moulin Rouge dancer La Goulue is placed at the center, with her partner, the dancer Valentin the Boneless, in the foreground and the audience in the background represented only by shadows. It is pointed out that the poster was drawn under the influence from Japanese ukiyo-e. This is an important work, testifying to artistic exchange between East and West.
