The world’s finest ceramics have a blue-green tint matching the sky
NARCISSUS BASIN, celadon Northern Song dynasty, end of 11th-early 12th century Kiln /Ru ware (gift of SUMITOMO Group, the ATAKA Collection) Photo:六田知弘
Ru ware celadon was specially made for the imperial court of the Northern Song dynasty (960-1127) in China, and is considered to be the pinnacle of celadon.
Ru ware celadon is characterized by its beautiful pale blue-green glaze resembling the pale blue-green sky seen through gaps in clouds after rain. This blue-green shade is called “tensei ” in Japanese. Also, the four-legged, oval shape, known as “narcissus basin”, is a representative form of Ru ware. While there are few surviving examples of Ru ware celadon in the world, this piece is among the finest of the few that remain in Japan. It is truly a masterpiece of celadon that Osaka takes pride in.
