An exquisite masterpiece that brings to life the stories of The Tale of Genji and The Tales of Ise

This lacquered inkstone box was made during the Edo period (1603–1867). The front of the lid is decorated with a motif from “Hashihime” in The Tale of Genji, while the back of the lid features a motif from “Azuma kudari” in The Tales of Ise. The ivory waterwheel on the front of the lid rotates when the lid is tilted. This box is from the collection of Ugo Alfonso Casal (1888–1964), a Swiss man who came to Japan toward the end of the Meiji era (1868–1912) and lived in Japan until his death in 1964, during which time he studied Japanese culture. During the Second World War, the box was entrusted to the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts for safekeeping.
