A look of pride in her healthy beauty
Amedeo MODIGLIANI, Reclining Nude with Loose Hair, 1917
Italian-born Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920) painted many portraits, but the present work is an important example from the period when he worked on a series of nude paintings. The reclining nude is a traditional form in Western art, but what is unusual here is that this painting features a simplified depiction of the interior scene and a modern bold cropping of the legs and head. Here the female model gazes back at the viewer with a slight smile, as if taking pride in her healthy body. The woman’s voluptuous body points to the fact that the artist at one point sought to be a sculptor.
