Symbols of wealth and prosperity

Important Cultural Property DISH, blue-and-white porcelain with design of a bird eating a loquat Ming dynasty, Yongle period (1403-1424) Kiln/ Jingdezhen ware (gift of SUMITOMO Group, the ATAKA Collection) Photo:六田知弘

This dish, fired without the slightest distortion, demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship at the Jingdezhen imperial kilns during the Yongle period (1403-1424). In the center of the dish, a bird called "shoudainiao" in Chinese is depicted pecking at a loquat. The drawing makes good use of the white space, creating the appearance of a regular painting. The bird is a symbol of longevity and success, and the loquat, an abundant golden fruit, is a symbol of wealth and prosperity. The surrounding area is filled with auspicious designs of fruit, such as pomegranates and peaches. Such blue and white porcelain dishes were taken to the Islamic world and used as tableware at banquets held by sultans.
