The elegant and stately Shigi style
Important Cultural Property Pitcher, Bronze Kamakura period/13th-14th centuries Taman Collection
This bronze pitcher, cast during the Kamakura period (1185–1333), was used to serve hot or cold water in Shinto shrines or Buddhist temples. Pitchers of this style are known as Shigi-style pitchers, of which this is a particularly fine example. Of the 663 pieces in the Taman Collection, 154 are Buddhist art. The collection contains four Important Cultural Properties, including this pitcher. Among the collections of the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts, the Taman Collection best represents Japanese art.
