A Hokusai original showing the influence of Western painting

Important Cultural Property Hokusai Katsushika, Shell Gathering Edo period/19th century

This work is the original of an ukiyo-e painting painted by Katsushika Hokusai (ca. 1760–1849). The painting depicts people digging for shellfish on a sandbar with Mt. Fuji in the distance. This work was the first of Hokusai’s works to be designated an Important Cultural Property (in 1997) and is known as one of his best original paintings (an ukiyo-e picture painted by the artist himself, not a woodblock print). The painting also shows that the breadth of the Japanese art collection of the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts extends beyond Osaka.
