The harmony of an olive-green glaze and exquisite sculpture
Important Cultural Property BOTTLE, celadon with carved peony scroll design Northern Song dynasty, 11th-12th century Kiln/ Yaozhou ware (gift of SUMITOMO Group, the ATAKA Collection) Photo:六田知弘
The appeal of the celadon works produced at the Yaozhou kiln in the Northern Song dynasty lies in the olive-green glaze that looks transparent, and the deep and exacting sculptural technique. This bottle is regarded as one of the supreme masterpieces from that kiln. The deft sculpturing produces gradations of shade on the glaze, and this makes the intricate patterns stand out on the sides. Called “tuluping” or “taibaizun” , the unique formation of a slightly tensed shoulder also exhibits a perfectly balanced beauty of form. This is the world’s sole piece of celadon from the Yaozhou kiln that is superb in all three aspects of glaze, sculpture, and form.
