Ingenious design by an unknown sculptor
Articulated dragon by Chikurinsai Akiyama 12th year of the Taisho period (1923) Donated by Toshihiro Saijo
Chikurinsai Akiyama (1891–1937) was a sculptor from the Kohama area of Osaka who produced jizai-okimono, elaborate articulated wooden craftworks such as dragons and lobsters with fully movable joints. These were normally made from solid metal, so wooden versions required additional structural innovations. Chikurinsai’s ingenious solution was to use hidden metal wires for reinforcement. This impressive piece showcases his stunning sculpture technique as well as the innovation and can-do attitude characteristic of Osaka.
