A gorgeous jar bringing to life the world of flowers and birds

Important Cultural Property JAR, porcelain with flower-and-bird design in cloisonné style ({{fahua}} ware) Ming dynasty, 15th century (gift of SUMITOMO Group, the ATAKA Collection) Photo:六田知弘

Fahua is a Chinese method of creating a three-dimensional design by raising the contours of elements in the design and applying low-fired lead glazes in blue, white, yellow, green, and purple. This jar is one of the largest examples of fahua porcelain thought to have been produced in Jingdezhen kilns. A pair of birds perched on a flowering tree is vividly depicted in relief on two sides of the body, with butterflies fluttering between them. Moreover, dark blue and turquoise blue are effectively used with white and pale yellow to produce a jar displaying a gorgeous, elegant ambiance.
