The planetarium's supporting actor, adding color to the starry sky
Carl Zeiss constellation projector
This constellation projector was designed to complement the planetarium installed in the Osaka Electric Science Museum in 1937, by overlaying constellation pictures onto the planetarium projection of the sky.
Transparent plates with constellation pictures painted on them are mounted on the machine and then projected using light bulbs. The painted plates were initially imported from Germany, although newer designs produced by domestic manufacturers were subsequently adopted in the post-war period as more in keeping with Japanese sensibilities. Constellation projections play an important role in contributing to our understanding of the configuration and positioning of constellations, and are still in use today.
