Carl Zeiss II Planetarium, the first planetarium in Japan
Carl Zeiss II Planetarium Cultural Property Designated by the City of Osaka, Japan Astronomical Heritage
The first planetarium projector in Japan, this was installed at the Osaka Electric Science Museum (now the Osaka Science Museum) that opened in 1937. Made by Carl Zeiss in Germany, it represented the cutting-edge technology of its day, using dome screen projection to faithfully reproduce the appearance of stars in the night sky all over the world, including past and future configurations. The planetarium made a significant contribution to science and astronomy in Japan for 52 years before finally being decommissioned in 1989. The commentary and explanation style developed by the staff of the Electric Science Museum served as a template for planetariums all over the country that resonates to this day.
