An experimental chair with an eye to the future
Marcel BREUER, Armchair ti 1a, 1922
The Bauhaus, a school founded in Weimar, Germany, aimed to establish a new comprehensive art form without separating art and craft. It attracted young people who felt uncomfortable with traditional art education, among them Marcel Breuer (1902–1981), who was born in Hungary and dropped out of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. After entering the Bauhaus, Breuer participated in experimental projects with an eye toward standardizing and mass-producing housing and furniture. The present piece was one of his projects and is an important piece by Breuer from his student days.
