Star chart by Edo-era astronomer Harumi Shibukawa
Star chart, "Tenmon bun'ya no zu"(The History of Science Collection of the Osaka Science Museum )
This large circular star chart, created by the 17th-century astronomer Harumi Shibukawa, shows all the fixed stars in the sky visible from Japan. It depicts the Chinese-style constellations used in Japan at the time, along with older regional designations such as Musashi and Ise on the circumference. The Japanese title Tenmon Bunya no Zu references the notion of connections between heaven and earth that features in astrological horoscopes.
Harumi Shibukawa was a leading figure in the field of astronomy during the Edo period (1603-1867), with several other contributions including the creation of the first Japanese domestically lunisolar calendar.
