Metasequoia, one of the famous living fossil plant
Metasequoia fossil specimens collected by Shigeru Miki
This is a collection of fossil and recent specimens of the genus Metasequoia of the family Cupressaceae . They were collected by Dr. Shigeru Miki, who studied aquatic plants and fossil plants at the Osaka City University (the current Osaka Metropolitan University) and other institutions. Dr. Miki researched fossil plants from Japanese Islands and established the new genus Metasequoia on the basis of these fossils. Later, living Metasequoia trees were discovered in China, and they became one of the world’s famous living fossils. Dr. Miki was also a pioneer in aquatic plant research, and his collection, which includes many type specimens of aquatic plants, is stored into the Osaka Museum of Natural History.
