Osaka is also one of the important sources of Cretaceous fossils in Japan
Cretaceous fossils from the Izumi Group
The Izumi Group which contains abundant Cretaceous fossils such as ammonites and mosasaurs is distributed in the Izumi Mountains, southern part of Osaka Prefecture. Many researchers have studied this group and its fossils, and some new fossil species from the Izumi Group have been described and are stored at Osaka City University (the current Osaka Metropolitan University) and the Osaka Museum of Natural History. Amateur fossil collectors and their collections have supported and contributed to these paleontological researches and curatorial efforts. 3D images of some important ammonoid specimens have been released on the website (https://sketchfab.com/OMNH).
