Text and pictures telling the history of the camellia
Kishikawa Camellia Book Collection
Shinichiro Kishikawa devoted his life to elucidation of the history of garden species of camellia. The history of the camellia has a special appeal because it offers an overview of the history of gardening culture worldwide. The tradition of growing camellias began before the medieval period in Japan, and gardening culture spread even among commoners in the Edo period (1603-1867). Meanwhile, of the various plants transmitted to Europe from all parts of the world, the camellia was among the most charming and won a booming popularity. Kishikawa left behind comprehensive materials related to the camellia, including pretty picture books and painted folding screens, a research group magazine with beautiful plates, and documents on cultivation of camellias.
