A Paris wall comes into view

Yuzo Saeki, Church(1924)

This oil painting was made by the Western-style painter Yuzo Saeki (1898–1928). It depicts a church in the suburbs of Paris, but the precise location is unknown. It appears to have been produced after the French painter Maurice de Vlaminck criticized Saeki when the latter was beginning to explore new possibilities. Saeki was born in Osaka, and after graduating from Tokyo School of Fine Arts, he traveled to France twice, where he studied for a total of three years. A distinctive feature of his art is that it incorporated street posters, signs, and other items with lettering.
