A work the artist undertook despite his illness
SAEKI Yuzo, Postman, 1928
Saeki Yuzo (1898–1928) was an Osaka artist who painted the streets of Paris. Postman is one of Saeki’s last works, painted about five months before his untimely death at the age of 30. The postman’s body is tilted at an angle, and the painting is done with quick, energetic brushstrokes, giving the viewer a sense of Saeki’s drive as he continued to paint despite his illness. After the artist’s death, Osaka businessman Yamamoto Hatsujiro , who discovered Saeki’s talent, acquired the work, and in 1983 his family donated it to the city of Osaka.
