A prime example of exquisite joinery craftsmanship

Miniature models of fittings 12th year of the Taisho period to 1st year of the Showa period (1923-1926) (Donated by Shigenori Edo)

These miniature sliding doors date from 1923 to 1926 and were made by Jutaro Edo, a joiner who ran a sliding door shop called "Edoju" in the former Higashi-ku of Osaka. They were shown to prospective customers when ordering, much like a modern-day catalog. The intricate detailing showcases the superb craftsmanship of Osaka craftsmen. These pieces tell us a lot about the stylistic preferences of the people of Osaka, including the merchants and restaurant owners of the time. Sliding doors for the summer and those using glass panels in particular give us a glimpse into the lifestyle of the era.
