Ultrasimple forms

IMAMURA Teruhisa, Work, 1978

Imamura Teruhisa (1918–2004), an Osaka-born sculptor, was a member of the Kohdo Art Association, which had a major influence on Osaka art after the Second World War. He presented his works as part of the activities of the Association. A rod and stonelike lump are perfectly balanced on a rounded rectangular base, creating stability within instability. Starting from embodied forms, he later switched to natural forms. Finally, he developed sculptures that combined extremely simple forms. The present work represents Imamura’s final stage.
