Impressive butterflies that can no longer be obtained
Kaoru Sumiyoshi’s butterfly collection
This is a collection of butterflies of the world centered on Ornithoptera and birdwing butterflies collected by Kaoru Sumiyoshi. It is made up of precious specimens for research that are beautiful and large, and also accompanied by data on their collection. Trading in many of the species is now prohibited, making it impossible to acquire such a collection in the future. Sumiyoshi worked as an official of the government of Osaka City, and was later appointed professor of exercise physiology at the Hyogo University of Teacher Education. While discharging his duties there, he put effort into the research and collection of butterflies. In 1986, he donated his collection to the museum, and later published a catalogue of it.
