Proof that Osaka was once a sea area
Fossils of whale bones and shells excavated from underground in the Osaka Plain
Abundant shell fossils, including whale bone fossils, have been excavated from most construction sites in the Osaka Plain, such as subways and large buildings. Underground surveys of the plain have revealed that between 6,000 and 5,000 years ago, the ancient sea, the Kawachi Bay, was widespread throughout the plain. Currently, live whales and drifting whale carcasses occasionally wash up around the Osaka Bay. The whale fossils found underground of the Osaka Plain give us the sense that the same wash up events have been occurring repeatedly since ancient times.
