The pinnacle of 20th-century mycology pictorial books still in use today

Tsuguo Hongo mycology materials

Tsuguo Hongo, Professor Emeritus of Shiga University, was one of the first names in Japanese mycological research. He prepared of almost all the atlas books of mushrooms published in Japan from the late 20th century to the early 21st century. After his death, the research materials left at his home were donated to the Osaka Museum of Natural History. These specimens are still being used today as research materials to shed light in search of new species. Another feature is the pictures Hongo routinely made for his mycological records. Painted in fine watercolors, his illustrations of mushrooms and toadstools were executed in intricate detail. They elaborately depicted the characteristics of their subjects, and conveyed them even better than the accompanying text in the books.
