The history of Osaka told by subterranean strata from the Plain

Boring cores from the Osaka Plain

The vicinity of the Osaka Plain also has many active faults. The Uemachi Fault in particular poses a threat to metropolitan Osaka. The authorities have therefore been conducting deep-strata boring surveys since the occurrence of the Southern Hyogo Prefecture Earthquake in 1995. These surveys shed light on the history of activity along the Uemachi Fault and the geologic structure of the Osaka Plain. The high-quality cores from this boring have been used for diverse research that is yielding results concerning the Osaka Plain strata and correspondence with climate change worldwide. The museum has a collection of many geologic materials in addition to these cores.
