Folk toys reflect the sensibilities of different regions of Japan. In Osaka, various mementoes and souvenirs were made for visitors to local shrines and temples. Clay dolls at Sumiyoshi Taisha shrine are a typical example. The clay dolls were made in many different styles, reflecting the faith of worshippers. The shinko (tiger god) paper doll is a well-known amulet from Sukunahikona shrine in Kitahama in the Chuo-ku of Osaka.
Well into the 20th century, large cities around the country used a lot of paper, and the production of paper dolls using the waste paper thus produced became popular. These traditional toys of Osaka gives us a glimpse into the city’s unique urban culture.
