Everyone knows the story of the battle between the monkey and the crab

Kocho Ueda, Battle between Crab and Monkey Edo period/19th century

This work, painted by the Osaka artist Ueda Kocho (1788–1850), depicts the story of the crab and the monkey. The monkey threw a hard persimmon at a mother crab, killing her. The mother crab’s son—along with his accomplishes: mortar, scissors, needle, and chestnut—sought revenge against the monkey. The inscription on this painting was copied by the Osaka Confucian scholar Shinozaki Shochiku from an inscription by Nakai Riken on the work Kaishi batsuen (The Crab Army Attacks the Monkey), owned by the Kaitokudo school. In the serious way in which the old tale is written, one can sense how the scholars at Kaitokudo amused themselves.
