A book passing on copper refining technology in Osaka in the Edo period
A book introducing Sumitomo copper refinery
Published by the Sumitomo Copper Blowing Factory, which refined copper in Osaka in the Edo period (1603-1867), this book describes copper refining. The Sumitomo family had it prepared and published for gift use. Using both text and charts, it sets forth the entire process from extraction of copper ore from mines to refining and shipping, as well as the tools used in the job. At the time, copper extracted from mines nationwide was all refined in Osaka. Of all of the copper refineries in the city, the Sumitomo Copper Blowing Factory boasted the largest size. The process charts in the book afford glimpses of the appearance of the factory, which Siebold reportedly visited.
