A quiet night in Dotonbori
KOBAYASHI Kahaku, Dotombori at Night, 1921
Kobayashi Kahaku(1896–1943) was born and raised in Kita-ku, Osaka. This is an early, ambitious work by Kahaku, a true Naniwa boy (native of Osaka), in which he attempted realistic expression. He depicted the ordinarily lively Dotombori during a quiet night. Although a lively party with geisha should be taking place, he does not depict any “vulgar” elements, and instead created a dreamy, other-worldly scene without any sense of hustle and bustle. “Oyster boats”, famous floating restaurants specializing in oyster dishes in Osaka, are moored on the river, and the light shining from them dreamily illuminates the river’s surface.
