A decisive battle with everything on the line!

Important Cultural Property Battle of Sekigahara folding screen Edo period (Maeda Collection)

This piece, the oldest surviving depiction of the 1600 Battle of Sekigahara on a folding screen, shows two scenes: the day before, and the day of the battle. It is a stunning rendition of an epic battle, showing key details such as the Western Army holed up inside Ogaki Castle in Gifu prefecture; a column of Ieyasu’s troops advancing on Sekigahara; it also depicts the great spectacle that divided the country, such as the Western Army fleeing to Mt. Ibuki after the war and the Eastern Army pursuing them. This folding screen is said to have been one of the wedding trousseau of Princess Matehime, Tokugawa Ieyasu's adopted daughter, when she married into the Hirosaki Tsugaru family. It later became part of the collection of Osaka entrepreneur Tadashi Maeda. In 1994, Maeda’s son Yoshie donated the Maeda Collection to the Osaka City Museum (now the Osaka Museum of History). This folding screen is considered one of Osaka’s most significant cultural treasures.
