While combining various beliefs, this mandala is centered on a heavenly maiden riding a white fox
Mandala of Dakini-Ten (Ḍākinī) Muromachi period/15th century Taman Collection
Dakiniten, a type of yaksha (goblin who protects the Buddhist faith), appears here as a celestial maiden riding a white fox. This work, a rare example combining elements from various other faiths, is a superb representative of Buddhist painting in the Taman Collection. Kiyoomi Taman, an Osaka lawyer, played a role in several incidents concerning the preservation of cultural properties, including one where he took on, at his own expense, the defense of a construction manager implicated in a fire at the Golden Hall of Horyuji Temple and won an acquittal at the Osaka High Court.
