Recollections of urban fisherman

Fishing tackle used in the Yodo River Showa period/20th century

The Yodo River, which flows through the city of Osaka, is usually associated with transportation and logistics, as well as its contribution to the natural environment. Less well known is that it has long been a rich source of both freshwater and saltwater fish, sustaining the livelihoods of fishermen from ancient times to the present. This collection showcases fishing tackle used by fishermen in the Yodo River basin area in the latter half of the 20th century. Today, the Yodo River has a number of movable weirs, causing its conditions to change daily. Fishermen on the Yodo River have long used their expertise to monitor the river's hydrography and environmental conditions, sometimes competing with each other for the best fishing spots.
