A developing city
KOIDE Narashige, Urban Landscape, 1925
In 1925 Osaka surpassed Tokyo in both population and area to become the largest city in Japan. The present work, a masterpiece cityscape, was created in September of that year by Koide Narashige (1887–1931), Osaka’s leading Western-style painter, and captures the Nakanoshima area, where modern urbanization progressed rapidly. Koide skillfully brought together the developing city—old and new buildings mixed together with their black tile roofs, modern concrete architecture, and factory chimneys in the distance—by effectively using the curve of the Dojima River in the center.
