慶長5年（1600）の関ヶ原合戦を前日と当日の2場面に分けて描いた最古の合戦図屏風です。向かって右隻には揖斐川を渡り本陣とした赤坂に向かう家康軍、石田三成が居る大垣城、岡山を中心とした東軍の陣営、十四日の杭瀬川の戦いや西軍の陣営が描かれます。向かって左隻※には合戦当日の光景として、西軍に攻めかかる東軍、西軍の陣所が燃えあがる様子、松尾山から西軍を目がけて鉄砲を撃ちかける小早川秀秋勢などが描かれます。兵糧を運ぶところなど野営の様子が詳しく描かれており、当時の合戦の実態を知るうえでも重要です。
弘前藩主津軽家に伝わったもので、『津軽藩旧記』によれば、徳川家康の姪で養女となった満天姫が津軽家に嫁ぐ際の輿入れ道具として持参したとあります。のちに時を経て大阪の実業家前田維氏の蒐集品となりました。平成6年（1994）、ご子息の善衛氏より大阪歴史博物館の前身である大阪市立博物館に「前田コレクション」として寄贈されました。

This pair of folding screens, the oldest showing the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, depicts the battle in two scenes, one on the day before the battle and the other on the day itself. The right screen shows Tokugawa Ieyasu’s troops crossing the Ibi River and heading for their headquarters Akasaka, as well as Ogaki Castle, where Ishida Mitsunari was stationed, the Eastern Army’s camp centered around Okayama, the Battle of Kuisegawa on September 14, the day before the battle, and the Western Army’s camp. The left screen* shows scenes from the day of the battle, including the Eastern Army’s attack on the Western Army, the Western Army’s camp burning, and Hideaki Kobayakawa’s forces firing guns at the Western Army from Mt. Matsuo. The detailed depictions of the camp, including the transport of military provisions, are important for understanding the actual conditions of battle at the time. According to Tsugaru-han kyuki (A History of Tsugaru Domain), Princess Matehime, the niece and adopted daughter of Ieyasu, brought this pair of folding screens with her as part of her dowry to the Tsugaru family when she married into the family, and they were handed down in the Tsugaru family, hereditary lords of Hirosaki Domain. Later, the folding screens entered the collection of the Osaka businessman Tadashi Maeda, and in 1994 his son Yoshie Maeda donated the Maeda Collection, including these folding screens, to Osaka City Museum, the predecessor of Osaka Museum of History.
