The Power of Citizens: Material related to the "Specimens of shells and stones collected by Kenkado Kimura"

Important Cultural Property, Portrait of Kenkado Kimura, Buncho Tani, 1802Owned by the Osaka Prefectural Board of Education, on loan to the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts

This portrait of Kenkado Kimura was painted by Buncho Tani, a master of Edo Nanga painting who enjoyed a close relationship with Kenkado Kimura during his lifetime. After Kenkado’s death, his family commissioned Buncho to paint the portrait. The inscription in the painting reveals that it was completed two months after Kenkado’s death. The slightly drooping corners of the eyes, the large nose, and above all, the way he smiles with his mouth wide open are striking, making this masterpiece of early modern portraiture exude the tolerance and generosity of Kenkado, who welcomed the many people who came to visit from all over the country.
