The Power of Citizens: Material related to the "Specimens of shells and stones collected by Kenkado Kimura"
Kenkado Kimura, Landscape, 1799
Today, Kenkado Kimura is known as a scholar, but his paintings were also popular, and he was listed as a painter in a contemporary directory published in Osaka at the time. This work depicts an autumn scene with tree leaves in shades of red and yellow, accented by the light indigo of the water surface and roofs of houses and the pale green of the tall tree to the right, creating a feeling of the fresh autumn air. A lone man of high character standing in a hut by the water seems to invite us to enter the painting and enjoy the scenery.
