作者の燕文貴は、中国・北宋時代の宮廷画家です。本作は燕文貴の真作である可能性が最も高いと考えられている貴重な画巻です。画中に捺された鑑蔵印からは、本作が歴代の文人によって珍重されてきた歴史が窺えます。北宋時代の本格的な山水画として、中国絵画史を語るうえでなくてはならない作品です。
本作を含む阿部コレクションは、東洋紡績株式会社の社長をつとめ、その後貴族院議員ともなった阿部房次郎（あべふさじろう　1868-1937 ）氏が収集した中国書画160件からなる、世界的にも著名なコレクションです。

The artist of this painting, Yan Wengui, was a court painter during the Northern Song dynasty in China. This precious scroll is believed most likely to be an authentic work by Yan Wengui. Collectors’ seals stamped on the scroll reveal much of the provenance of the work, indicating that the painting has been highly prized by literati throughout history. As an authenticated landscape painting from the Northern Song dynasty, this work is indispensable to the history of Chinese painting. This work was part of the Abe Collection, a world-famous collection of 160 Chinese paintings and calligraphy accumulated by Fusajiro Abe (1868–1937), who served as president of Toyobo and later as a member of the House of Peers.
