The Power of the Future: Material related to the "Folding screen with a painting of a ship carrying a Joeson mission to Japan"

Item registered on the UNESCO Memory of the World Picture of a member of a Joseon emission to Japan Edo period (1603 - 1867) (From the collection of Shin Gisu)

The picture depicts a person with braided hair hanging down his back, writing calligraphy on a sheet of paper held up by a Japanese person from horseback.
The banner in the upper right corner tells us that he is an attendant of a Joseon mission that came to Japan during the Edo period (1603-1867). Although commoners were not permitted to interact with the missions, people along the roadside enjoyed engaging with them as if asking for autographs from pop stars. This painting by Itcho Hanabusa (1652–1724), believed to be based on the visit of the Joseon mission in 1711, can be interpreted as a depiction of the peaceful relations between the neighboring countries.
